Nastaliq or Naskh?

Most printed Urdu — books, newspapers, poetry — is set in Nastaliq, the hanging script whose words slope down towards the baseline. Naskh is upright and compact, and easier to read at small sizes on screen. Readers expect Nastaliq for anything literary.

Give it room

Nastaliq needs far more vertical space than Latin or Naskh text. Set a generous line height — around twice the font size — or the words of one line will collide with the next.

Setting Urdu text

Urdu needs right-to-left layout and letters that join. In Word, add Urdu under the language settings. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type. Nastaliq also needs a generous line height.
