Check the conjuncts
Devanagari joins consonants into conjuncts such as क्ष, त्र and ज्ञ. A well-made font draws them as proper ligatures; a weaker one stacks half-forms awkwardly. Type a few words with conjuncts into the preview before choosing.
Marathi and Nepali
Marathi and Nepali prefer slightly different shapes for a few letters. Fonts that support them switch automatically when the text is marked with the right language — in HTML, lang="mr" or lang="ne".
Setting Hindi text
Devanagari needs a text engine that builds conjuncts and places vowel signs. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type, or ि will land on the wrong side of its consonant.
