About Tiro Devanagari Hindi

Tiro Devanagari Hindi began as the Devanagari for the Murty Classical Library of India, a series of classical Indian literature, and it shows: this is a book face, steeped in the metal types of the Nirnaya Sagar Press of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The letters are broad, with generous counters and strong diagonal strokes, and the conjuncts balance traditional and modern forms. It comes with a true italic — unusual for Devanagari — and a Latin set with the diacritics used to transcribe Indian languages.

Choose it for literature, scholarly work, poetry and anything printed at length. For screens and small interface text, a sans such as Hind is the safer companion.

Licence

Tiro Devanagari Hindi is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Installing it

Windows.
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
macOS.
Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
On the web.
Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Hindi text.
Devanagari needs a text engine that builds conjuncts and places vowel signs. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type, or ि will land on the wrong side of its consonant.
