Kannada fontsಕನ್ನಡ
Kannada typefaces for print and screen. The script is a close cousin of Telugu, with the same rounded letters and the same stacked consonant clusters.
3 open-licensed fonts that can set Kannada, each free to download for personal and commercial work.
Check the stacks
Kannada writes the second consonant of a cluster beneath the first, as in ಕ್ಷ or ಸ್ತ್ರ. Type a few into the preview to check they stay legible and do not collide.
Unicode, not legacy fonts
A lot of Kannada text was typed in the legacy, non-Unicode fonts of older Nudi and Baraha versions. These fonts are Unicode, so convert legacy text before using it with them.
Setting Kannada text
Kannada needs a text engine that stacks consonant clusters. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type.
