About Tiro Kannada

Tiro Kannada blends several historical sources: the crisp, open counters of the nineteenth-century types of the Basel Mission Press, the ligature styling of the Gujarat Type Foundry in the 1930s, and the dynamic stroke angles of an unattributed twentieth-century Kannada textbook. It was first made for the Murty Classical Library of India.

Its subscript consonants are drawn generously large, which makes Kannada clusters much easier to read than in many digital fonts. The release adds an italic and a Latin set with diacritics for transliteration.

Use it for books, literature and scholarly Kannada; for interfaces, a plainer face like Hubballi suits better.

Licence

Tiro Kannada is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Kannada text.
Kannada needs a text engine that stacks consonant clusters. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type.
