Conjuncts
Bengali has hundreds of conjuncts — ক্ষ, ঙ্গ, ন্ত — and older or decorative fonts often fall back to stacked half-letters. Type a word such as বিজ্ঞান into the preview to see how the font joins them.
Unicode, not Bijoy
Many Bangla documents were typed with Bijoy, which stores Bengali letters in the slots of Latin ones. These fonts are Unicode, so text from a Bijoy document has to be converted before it displays correctly.
Setting Bengali text
Bengali needs a text engine that builds conjuncts and reorders vowel signs such as ি and ে. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type.
