About Tiro Bangla

Tiro Bangla was drawn by John Hudson and Fiona Ross for the Murty Classical Library of India, following Bengali manuscript traditions and the proportions of the handset metal type used by Kolkata's leading publishing houses.

It is a literary face, with real stroke modulation and the even texture a long Bengali text needs. The open-licence release adds an italic, adapted by Neelakash Kshetrimayum, and a Latin set with diacritics for transcribing Indian languages.

Choose it for books, poetry, journals and academic work. For apps and small sizes on screen, Hind Siliguri is the plainer and safer choice.

Tiro Bangla is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Bengali text.
Bengali needs a text engine that builds conjuncts and reorders vowel signs such as ি and ে. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type.
