About Cairo

Cairo is a contemporary Arabic and Latin family by Mohamed Gaber, who extended the Latin of Titillium Web into Arabic. The Arabic takes its cue from Kufi — flat, horizontal and built on a steady rhythm — rather than the rounded Naskh of book type.

Short ascenders and descenders keep lines compact, and wide open counters keep the letters clear on screen, which has made it one of the most popular Arabic fonts on the web. It ships here as a single variable file running from extra light to black, plus a slant axis.

The light weights handle interface text and short paragraphs; the heavy ones make strong headlines. It covers the Persian and Urdu letters as well as Arabic, so one family can carry a multilingual product.

Licence

Cairo is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Installing it

Windows.
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
macOS.
Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
On the web.
Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Arabic text.
Arabic needs right-to-left layout and letters that join. Word handles both once Arabic is added under its language settings. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type if letters appear disconnected.
