About Aref Ruqaa

Aref Ruqaa brings the Ruqaa hand — the quick, compact script much of the Arab world uses for everyday writing — into type. The project is led by Khaled Hosny, with a Latin based on Hermann Zapf's AMS Euler, respaced for ordinary text rather than mathematics.

Ruqaa is short and clipped, with few flourishes and letters that hug the baseline, so it reads as personal and informal without the ornament of Diwani or Thuluth. That makes it good for invitations, quotes, menus and headings with a handwritten warmth.

It comes in a regular and a bold. Keep it to headings and short passages; the compressed forms tire the eye over long text.

Licence

Aref Ruqaa is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Installing it

Windows.
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
macOS.
Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
On the web.
Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Arabic text.
Arabic needs right-to-left layout and letters that join. Word handles both once Arabic is added under its language settings. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type if letters appear disconnected.
