About Noto Nastaliq Urdu

Noto Nastaliq Urdu is Google's Nastaliq for Urdu, part of the Noto project to cover every script in use. Nastaliq is the hanging style in which most Urdu is printed — words slope down from right to left and stack into one another — and it is notoriously difficult to engineer as a font.

This one does it properly: letters join and cascade the way a reader of printed Urdu expects. It is a single variable file covering Regular to Bold.

Give it a lot of line height — twice the font size or more — or lines will collide. For small interface text a Naskh face is easier to read; for anything literary, this is the standard free choice.

Licence

Noto Nastaliq Urdu is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Installing it

Windows.
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
macOS.
Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
On the web.
Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Urdu text.
Urdu needs right-to-left layout and letters that join. In Word, add Urdu under the language settings. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type. Nastaliq also needs a generous line height.
