WhatsApp Font Generator

WhatsApp is the one platform here that formats text properly. It reads simple markup and renders real bold and italic โ€” so use that first, and keep the Unicode styles below for places markup does not reach, like your display name.

Wrap your words in these characters and WhatsApp renders real formatting. Unlike the Unicode styles below, the result stays searchable, copies as plain words, and is read correctly aloud by screen readers.

Questions

How do I bold text in WhatsApp?+

Wrap it in asterisks โ€” *like this*. WhatsApp converts it as you send. On mobile you can also select the text and choose Bold from the pop-up menu, which inserts the same characters for you.

Should I use the markup or the Unicode styles?+

The markup, wherever it works. It produces genuine bold text that stays searchable, copies cleanly and is read correctly by screen readers. Unicode styles only look bold โ€” they are different characters wearing a costume.

Why does the markup not work in my display name?+

WhatsApp only parses formatting inside message bodies. Names, group titles and the About field are stored as raw text, which is exactly where the Unicode styles below are useful.

Can I make bulleted lists and quotes?+

Yes. Start a line with a hyphen or asterisk for a bullet, with a number and full stop for a numbered list, or with a greater-than sign for a quote block. Backticks around a word give inline code.

Will the person receiving it see the same thing?+

Markup renders on every current WhatsApp client, so yes. Unicode styles depend on the recipient's device having the characters โ€” most modern phones do, older ones show boxes.
