About Ma Shan Zheng
Ma Shan Zheng is a brush calligraphy font for Simplified Chinese, in the heavy, majestic style of yinglian — the couplets of poems and blessings traditionally posted on either side of a doorway.
Every stroke carries the weight and taper of a loaded brush, so even a single character makes a strong statement. It is a natural choice for Spring Festival greetings, restaurant signs, packaging, book covers and anything with a traditional feel.
It covers the GB 2312 set of 6,763 characters. Being a full calligraphic face, it is for headlines and short phrases — never for body text.
Licence
Ma Shan Zheng is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.
Installing it
- Windows.
- Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
- macOS.
- Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
- On the web.
- Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an
@font-facerule rather than linking to this page. - Chinese text.
- Chinese fonts run to several megabytes because they carry thousands of characters. On a website, subset the font to the characters you use rather than serving the whole file, and mark the text lang="zh".
