About Space Mono

Space Mono was commissioned by Google Design from Colophon Foundry, and it is a monospaced face with opinions. Where most monospaces aim for neutrality, this one leans into the distortions that fixed-width setting forces — letters are stretched or compressed into their cells rather than quietly adjusted, and the result is deliberately a little strange.

That strangeness is the appeal. It reads as technical and slightly retro-futuristic at once, which suits editorial design about technology, data visualisation labels, brand work wanting an engineered feel, and code samples in a design context rather than a working editor.

It ships here with four styles — regular, italic, bold and bold italic — so it can carry a hierarchy on its own. For actual day-to-day coding, JetBrains Mono is the calmer choice.
