About Sawarabi Gothic

Sawarabi Gothic (さわらびゴシック) is a Japanese sans-serif by mshio, designed above all for legibility at small sizes. Its kana are clear and open and its strokes even and calm, so it reads comfortably on screens and in dense layouts.

It is a long-running open project, and its kanji set is still incomplete, so rarer kanji fall back to another font. Everyday text is well covered.

Use it for interfaces, captions, notes and web text in Japanese. A sister family, Sawarabi Mincho, offers a more traditional serif voice.

Licence

Sawarabi Gothic is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Installing it

Windows.
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
macOS.
Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
On the web.
Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Japanese text.
Japanese fonts run to several megabytes because they carry thousands of kanji. On a website, subset the font to the characters you use, and mark the text lang="ja" so browsers pick Japanese forms for kanji shared with Chinese.
