About Kosugi Maru

Kosugi Maru is a rounded gothic — maru gothic — from MOTOYA, based on one of the foundry's designs from the 1950s and first released for Android under the Apache License. Its name evokes the Japanese cedar, sugi, with its straight, thick trunk.

Low stroke contrast, rounded stroke ends and monospaced metrics give it a soft, friendly, very even texture — the classic look of Japanese signage, packaging and children's media.

It works well for headings, labels, apps and short text. The rounded ends lose crispness at very small sizes, where a standard gothic reads better.

Kosugi Maru is released under the Apache License 2.0, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.

Installing it

Windows.
Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
macOS.
Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
On the web.
Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an @font-face rule rather than linking to this page.
Japanese text.
Japanese fonts run to several megabytes because they carry thousands of kanji. On a website, subset the font to the characters you use, and mark the text lang="ja" so browsers pick Japanese forms for kanji shared with Chinese.
