About Chilanka
Chilanka is a Malayalam handwriting font by Santhosh Thottingal of Swathanthra Malayalam Computing. It follows the style of everyday Malayalam handwriting — the way letters look in a notebook or on a handwritten sign — rather than calligraphy.
Unlike many handwriting fonts, it carries a comprehensive Malayalam glyph set, including most of the unique conjuncts, so real text renders properly.
Use it for invitations, posters, children's material, social posts and anything personal. Keep it to short passages, and pair it with Manjari for longer text.
Licence
Chilanka is released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, which permits use in personal and commercial work. Read the licence before redistributing the files or selling them on.
Installing it
- Windows.
- Right-click the downloaded file and choose Install, or drop it into Settings → Personalisation → Fonts.
- macOS.
- Double-click the file and press Install Font in Font Book.
- On the web.
- Self-host the WOFF2 and declare it with an
@font-facerule rather than linking to this page. - Malayalam text.
- Malayalam needs a text engine that forms conjuncts. Word and current browsers handle it. In Photoshop, switch to the Middle Eastern and South Asian text engine under Preferences → Type.
